Part IX

Cailyn felt small and defenseless.  Touching the small crystal point necklace did little to reassure her.  Her mind kept telling her she was at work, she was safe, nothing was going to happen but those thoughts did little to lessen her nerves.  She felt exposed as if someone was watching her every movement.  It was odd, but the sensation only really bugged her while at work, she had felt fine when she ran to her apartment for a quick freshening up before rushing off to her work.

Once more she touched the piece of jet around her neck but frankly she just wanted her day to be over with so she could see Dominic.  She wanted to talk to him about his earlier words and she wanted to feel safe again.  The thought of his words caused her heart to beat faster and by lunch she had very little written and knew she would get even less done after lunch.  With the computer slightly to the side and her lunch in front of her, Cailyn did try her best to get work done.

"Cailyn," she visibly flinched hearing her boss, Craig, say her name.  Turning in her chair she looked up as her approached, "You okay?  You haven't been yourself the last couple of days, you have dark circles, and you were late."

"I am really sorry about being late, I didn't mean to over sleep this morning but the sad truth is I haven't been sleeping all the much."

"Go home, get some sleep.  To be blunt you're useless to me in the state you are in," He waved a dismissive hand to her.  Cailyn stood slowly, to look up at her boss.  He was a broad and tall man, nearing his forties with a stomach that was barely starting to say he needed to lay off the donuts.  His black hair was already becoming salt and pepper colored, which was evident even as close to his head his high and tight hair cut was.

She lowered her head as she nodded, his grey eyes were cold and emotionless, leaving her to feel like he was angrier than his joking tone had suggested.  "I am really sorry sir.  I promise this isn't a normal thing for me," Cailyn just got this job, she couldn't lose it now.  It was the starting point of a dream and if she lost this then her whole life would be chaos once more.  Tears stung her eyes but she kept them in as she collected her things.

"See that it doesn't become a normal thing for you," He shook his head and headed back to his office.  Cailyn left as quickly as she could, before too many of her coworkers returned to lunch.

As she drove back to Dominic's house she let the tears fall as the sleepless nights, the stress of work, her worry for her future, and what Dominic would tell her weighed so heavily on her she didn't see the same car make all the same turns she did.  She didn't notice that a strange car parked in front of Dominic's neighbor's house.  As she walked up to the door she was too distracted to notice man behind her, who pushed her into the house as soon as the knob was turned.

Cailyn fell over the threshold into Dominic's living room, when she twirled around she expected to look up at to see her assailant, the hope that it had been Dominic getting to ruff with her died when she saw different giant catching himself on the door, apparently he hadn't expected to change size in this house.  What she hadn't expected was to see that this giant was her boss.  Scrambling to back away from as he turned cold eyes onto her, Cailyn found her voice. "DOMINIC!"  She knew she had little chance to run away from a giant but she had to try anyway.

Hearing the door open, he was already confused and had been heading out to see who would try to break into a giant's house.  So it was with luck Dominic had entered the living room to watch Cailyn trip into the living room and another giant follow her.  He, like the other two, was dumb struck by the situation until Cailyn screamed for him and began running away.  This other giant was going after her.  Dominic reacted on pure instinct alone.

When you are a little over five inches tall in a world of giants you realize that when a giant tackles another one, it doesn't matter how many feet, in their distance, away you are, it is still a terrifying sight.  Cailyn was pressed against the wall, for the second time frozen in place as the two giants rolled around on the floor throwing punches and trying to pin the other to the ground.  It was when the fight momentarily got to close to her that she decided the bedroom would be safer.  Running into Dominic's room she once again found herself in the corner between wall and bookcase.

The sound of footsteps entering the bedroom made her start to shake, she prayed it was Dominic but hearing Craig's voice boom around her, she had to clasp a hand over her mouth to keep from crying.  What if Dominic was hurt?  "Come out witch.  Your pet can't protect you," He snarled, "I was going to be quick in killing you but it really pisses me off to see witches charm giants."

Charm?  Cailyn's heart stop, is that why Dominic said what he did?  The love spell she did should have never made anyone fall in love with her, just bring her to her true love.  Was what said earlier just forced on him by the spell?  Her legs couldn't support her, Cailyn clung to the wall to stay standing.  "Found you Cailyn." Her head jerked up seeing the giant standing above her with a gleeful expression.

The next several minutes were a blur as a hand, not being at all gentle, snatched her from her spot and deposited her on the ground before the now kneeling giant.  As she landed on her back all she could do was look up and watch with horror as he brought took out a knife.  To someone his size a small pocket knife, the Cailyn it might as well been a broad sword.  Cailyn screamed watching the blade descend towards her abdomen.  It stopped a good foot before, as if he had stabbed a wall.  Craig continued to struggle to get the blade to finish the stab, "Stupid witch!" He roared.

Cailyn looked around, realizing there was no reason for the blade to freeze, and no one was holding it back.  Nothing was there, except her own magic.  Cailyn shook her head, no she wasn't a witch like the ones Dominic told her about, Witchcraft didn't work as it was right now.  She couldn't possibly be doing this.  As Craig jerked the blade back, whatever holding it up disappeared and the knife met Cailyn's skin.  Magic is odd, for when you doubt yourself it stops working and Cailyn did just that.  Another scream as the pain felt like someone set fire to her thigh.

She didn't know if she could stop another stab or if she would survive the next one, and she didn't have to wonder because once more Dominic had one arm around Craig's throat and the other locked onto his wrist.  It hurt beyond belief to do so, but Cailyn struggled back into the corner because the world around her was shaking too much with the struggling giants to stay out.  A scream froze the blood inside her, Dominic?  She heard panting and someone heading towards her hiding spot, next came the sirens.

Cailyn began to lose a steady hold of what was going on.  A knife that size and considering the movement would have left a scratch on a giant.  Cailyn had a bloody trail starting near her hip and ending only a few inches from her knee.  Moving hadn't helped any and soon her world went black.

Dominic raised his hands in the air as the cops entered, yes giant cops, the creatures that only existed in fairytales had to have a policing force as well.  His arm was bleeding from where the intruder had stabbed him with the damned knife but the guy was in a lot worse of shape, seeing as during the battle Dominic managed to stab the man in the thigh with his own blade.  "I live here!"  He shouted, "My girlfriend's been hurt!"

"I don't see anyone but the two of you, where is she if she's so hurt?"  Cop's tend to enter a situation and believe everyone is dangerous and everyone is at fault until it could be sorted out

"She's human and hiding by the bookcase, please," Dominic's voice cracked as he pleaded to the cop, "Let me get her.  Please."  Giants handled things differently when humans were involved, they let the giant that knew them handle it, unless of course the giant they knew was the problem.

"Got any ID?" Dominic pointed to his wallet on his dresser.  He didn't argue, knowing the faster he cooperated the sooner he could get to Cailyn, when the cop gave the go ahead he rushed to the book case to find a bloody trail and a passed out Cailyn.  He was careful scooping her up.

"Oh god," The cut looked bad.

"Come on, bring her outside so the paramedics can get a proper look at her," From there things happened so fast and yet in slow motion for Dominic.  Cailyn was rushed to the hospital, the man who broke in was arrested, and Dominic sat beside a hospital bed until Cailyn woke up after surgery.  The doctors had spent some time making sure the damage wasn't more extreme then it looked, as well as the fact they had to replace the blood she lost.
I honestly have no clue how newspaper office’s work. I’m going off of what I have seen on T.V. so please bear with me on this one. Dominic and Cailyn really aren’t my normal characters where I could tell you everything about them easily, as I write I have had to learn who they are and what they would do so this is new.

Writing creepy parts of a story and then hearing footsteps and noises is unsettling, thank you kitties for the minor heart attack.
